Having taught at CLS for thirty years I had the pleasure of working with and teaching many wonderful students. I often share the latest news with many of my former colleagues. Several have suggested I write down my latest contacts. Many of these have been through facebook. Feel free to contact me if my info needs updating or correcting. - Connie Peterson

PRAYERS FOR THOSE IN THE MILITARY
Paul James graduated from CSP Univ. May 2008. He then began the fast track to become a United States Marine Pilot. He completed the Corps Officer Candidate School in Quanticao, Virginia. After a month of intensive flight training, he experienced his "first solo flight" of 120 miles. After that experience he is very excited about his choice for a future career. His many years of running "cross country" has been of benefit in helping him through the strenuous physical requirements. Paul has always valued his academic achievements and will have many opportunities to use them in service to his country.

Dear students at CLS,
I apologize that this note is so late in coming to you. We want to say thank you for the financial support you sent in for us. Two years in a row now you have brought in an amazing amount of money for us with your offerings. What a blessing you are to us! We think of all of you so often and we have so many good memories of
our year with you while we were on furlough. We miss you all very much and hope to see many of you when we return to the States for our next furlough in three years.

Former Hamline standout played pro baseball and basketball
St. Paul's Howie Schultz, one of the first athletes nationally to play Major League Baseball and in the NBA, died early Friday morning at age 87 after a four-month battle with cancer.
(by DENNIS BRACKIN, Star Tribune)
Schultz, who was a standout basketball player at St. Paul Central High School and Hamline University, had lived in Stillwater for 20 years before moving to Eden Prairie in the past year to be closer to family.
Schultz was offered a job playing baseball for Grand Forks in the Northern League the summer before enrolling at Hamline in 1941. Schultz played four years of basketball at Hamline -- helping the Pipers win their first national title in 1942 -- and professional baseball every summer, moving up to the Class AAA St. Paul Saints in 1942.
Schultz's contract was purchased by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1943, and with World War II taking many of the top major league players, he became the Dodgers' starting first baseman. Schultz at the time was declared 4-F by the military draft board because his 6-6 1/8 height was one-eighth of an inch over being draftable.
Schultz saw regular duty for the Dodgers until the start of the 1947 season, when Brooklyn sold his contract to the Philadelphia Phillies to make room for Jackie Robinson.
"His first year, Jackie played first base,'' Schultz said in a 2004 interview with the Star Tribune. "I'm a footnote in history -- the guy who was benched to allow baseball to be integrated.''
Schultz had a .241 batting average with 24 homers and 208 RBI in 470 major league games from 1943 to '48 with Brooklyn, Philadelphia and Cincinnati.
Schultz has another professional sports footnote: When his professional sports career ended in 1953, he and Gene Conley were the only players who had enough service time to qualify for pensions from both MLB and the NBA. Schultz played with the Anderson (Ind.) Packers of the National Basketball League from 1946 to '49, and when the NBL was absorbed by the NBA before the 1949-50 season, he became a member of the Fort Wayne Pistons.
Schultz played his final two NBA seasons with the Minneapolis Lakers, helping the team win NBA championships in 1952 and '53. After retiring from pro sports, Schultz coached high school basketball at Mechanic Arts and then replaced Joe Hutton Sr. at Hamline in 1965. Schultz coached the Pipers for seven seasons.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gloria, and their two children, Howard (Skip) Schultz Jr. and Becky. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday at Mueller-Bies Funeral Home, 2130 Dale St. N. in Roseville. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday (visitation at 10 a.m.) at St. Stephanus Lutheran Church, 739 Lafond Av. in St. Paul.
